Tab Car Rental

Questions we get asked

The things worth knowing before you book. If yours is not here, ask us.

Before you book

What do I need to rent a car in Syria?

Three things: a valid driving licence, an ID or passport, and a booking in your name. Licences from every country are accepted, so a foreign licence is fine, and there is no nationality restriction. The minimum age is 23. There is no security deposit: Tab takes no cash, places no hold on a card and asks for no promissory note (سند أمانة). The car is handed over full of fuel and comes back full.

Is there a security deposit?

No. Tab takes no security deposit on any car — no cash held, no hold on a card, and no promissory note (سند أمانة). That is unusual in this market, where a deposit in one of those three forms is close to standard, so it is worth saying plainly: you pay for the hire and nothing else is held against the car. At handover you bring your licence and your passport or ID, you sign, and you drive away.

Do I need a credit card to book?

Not necessarily. You can fill in the booking form with your dates and the car you want, and the full price is shown before you confirm, including the delivery fee if your pick-up point carries one. No deposit is taken and no hold is placed on a card, so a credit card is not needed as security either. Cancellation is free if your plans change.

How old do I have to be to rent?

The minimum age is 23. If you are 23 or older and hold a valid driving licence, you can rent from Tab. The licence may be issued in any country, and there is no restriction on nationality. Bring the licence itself with you at handover, along with an ID or passport, as the details are checked against the booking.

Can I rent with a foreign driving licence?

Yes. Tab accepts driving licences from every country, and there is no restriction based on where the licence was issued or on your nationality. A visitor, a returning Syrian, or a resident foreigner can all rent on the licence they already hold, as long as it is valid and they are 23 or older. Bring the licence and a passport or ID to the handover.

How much does it cost to rent a car per day?

Prices are in US dollars and differ by car, so each car carries its own rate card with its daily price on it. The price you see when you book is the whole of what you pay: there is no deposit on top of it, in any form. Delivery inside Damascus and at Damascus airport is free; delivery to Homs or Hama is forty dollars, to Latakia or Tartus fifty, and to Aleppo or Aleppo airport fifty-five, shown in the quote before payment.

Is there a daily kilometre limit?

Yes, every rental comes with a daily kilometre allowance, and the allowance is not the same for every car. Each car's page carries its own allowance and the rate charged for kilometres beyond it, so you can see exactly what your car gives you before you book. If you are planning long drives between cities, check that figure while you are choosing.

How do I book a car with Tab?

Book online. Choose your dates, your pick-up point and the car you want, and the booking form shows the full price, including any delivery fee, before you confirm. No deposit is asked for, so the figure on the quote is the figure you pay. Cancellation is free. If you would rather ask something first, or your trip needs an arrangement the form does not cover, send it through the contact form.

What makes Tab different from other rental companies in Syria?

Mainly how clear the terms are. Licences from any country are accepted from age 23, cancellation is free, and fuel is simply full to full. And we take no deposit at all — no cash, no card hold, no promissory note (سند أمانة) — which most companies here still do, so nothing is asked of you at handover beyond your licence and a signature. Delivery in Damascus and at the airport is free, we meet arriving passengers there, and a car may be left in a different city.

What are your opening hours?

We are open around the clock, every day of the week — 24 hours, including Fridays and public holidays. That is deliberate rather than incidental: most flights into Damascus land between midnight and four in the morning, and a counter that opens at nine is no use to somebody standing in the arrivals hall at two. Book any pick-up time you like, at any hour, and somebody will be there. If you are arriving on a late or delayed flight, say so in the booking and we will be waiting with the car ready.

Delivery, pick-up and drop-off

Where do I pick up the car?

You have two ways. Collect the car from our office at Damascus City Centre in Al-Mazraa, or ask us to bring it to you. Delivery anywhere inside Damascus and at Damascus airport is free. Homs and Hama are forty dollars, Latakia and Tartus fifty, and Aleppo and Aleppo airport fifty-five. Tell us where you want the car when you book, and any fee is shown in your quote before you pay. No deposit is taken wherever you collect from: nothing is held in cash, on a card or against a promissory note (سند أمانة).

Do you deliver the car to me, or do I have to come to you?

We deliver. We bring the car to your home, your office, your hotel or the airport and hand it over there with the papers. Inside Damascus and at Damascus airport that costs nothing. Outside Damascus we deliver to Homs and Hama for forty dollars, to Latakia and Tartus for fifty, and to Aleppo and Aleppo airport for fifty-five, shown in your quote before payment. Just pick your delivery point when you book.

Is delivery inside Damascus really free?

Yes, genuinely free. Delivery anywhere inside Damascus city and to Damascus International Airport costs nothing, and it is not added back later: no service charge and no fuel charge. Nor is a deposit taken to make up for it — none is taken on any car, in any form. You give us the address or the terminal, we bring the car there at the time you chose, hand over the keys and the papers, and you drive away.

How much does delivery to Aleppo, Homs, Hama, Latakia or Tartus cost?

Forty dollars to Homs or Hama, fifty to Latakia or Tartus, and fifty-five to Aleppo or Aleppo airport — one flat fee per place, whatever car you take. Inside Damascus and at Damascus airport delivery is free. The fee appears in your quote before you pay anything, so there is no surprise at handover. And there is no deposit on top of it: nothing is held in cash, on a card, or against a promissory note.

Can you meet me at the airport when I land?

Yes. Give us your flight number and arrival time when you book, and we will be waiting for you at Damascus International Airport with the car ready and the papers done. Meeting you there and delivering the car costs nothing. We meet arrivals at Aleppo airport too, where delivery is fifty-five dollars. You sign, take the keys and go — no deposit is asked for at the terminal or anywhere else.

Can you bring the car to my hotel?

Yes. Give us the hotel name and address when you book, and we will bring the car to the door at the time you choose. To a hotel anywhere in Damascus this is free. To a hotel in Homs or Hama it is forty dollars, in Latakia or Tartus fifty, and in Aleppo fifty-five, shown in your quote. Handover takes a few minutes, and no deposit is asked for at the door.

Can I collect the car from your office in Al-Mazraa?

Yes. Our office is at Damascus City Centre in Al-Mazraa, Damascus, and you are welcome to collect the car there. Bring your driving licence, from any country, and if you are twenty-three or over you can take the car. The tank is full when you take it and should be full when you bring it back. No deposit is taken at the counter: no cash, no card hold and no promissory note.

Can I take the car in one city and leave it in another?

Yes, one-way hires are possible. You can collect the car in one city and leave it in another. Tell us the pick-up city and the drop-off city when you book, or send us a message with your dates, and we will confirm the arrangement and the exact price with you before anything is paid. Nothing is decided at the last minute, and no deposit is taken on a one-way hire any more than on any other.

Can I change or extend my booking after I have made it?

Yes. If your plans move, write to us before the pick-up date and we will change the dates, the car or the delivery point wherever we can. Cancelling is free, so you are never locked into a booking you no longer need. If you want to keep the car longer than booked, tell us before the return day rather than after, and we will confirm what it costs.

Payment and the deposit

Is there a security deposit on the car?

No — there is no security deposit on any car in the fleet. Nothing is held in cash, nothing is held on a card, and no promissory note (سند أمانة) is signed. Most companies in Syria take a deposit in one of those three forms, so the question is a fair one to ask, and the answer here is simply none. What you are quoted for the hire is what you pay.

Will you hold or freeze an amount on my bank card?

No. We place no hold on a bank or credit card, because we take no deposit at all — not a card hold, not cash, and not a promissory note (سند أمانة), which are the three forms a deposit takes in this market. Your card is not used as security, and nothing is frozen on it while you have the car.

When do I pay — when I book, or when I take the car?

You do not pay when you book. Sending the booking form costs nothing and takes nothing from you; it reserves the car and fixes the dates and the price. Payment for the rental happens at handover, when the car reaches you. Cancelling before that is free, so booking early does not tie up any of your money.

What does the quoted price include?

The price covers the car for the dates you chose, with the daily kilometre allowance that belongs to that particular car. Each car's page shows its own allowance and the rate for extra kilometres, so check the car you like. Fuel is full to full: you receive it full and return it full. Any delivery fee is added in the quote before you pay.

Is the delivery fee extra, or part of the price?

It is shown separately, and you see it before you pay anything. Delivery inside Damascus and to Damascus airport is free. Homs and Hama are forty dollars, Latakia and Tartus fifty, and Aleppo and Aleppo airport fifty-five. Whatever applies to your pick-up point appears in the quote next to the rental price, so the total on your screen is the real total.

Can I cancel, and does cancelling cost me anything?

Cancellation is free. If you change your mind you cancel and pay nothing, because nothing was paid at booking. There is no fee, no forfeited amount and nothing you need to chase afterwards. Send us a line through the contact form with your booking details and the reservation is released.

What if my plans change and I need different dates?

Plans move, and that is fine. Because nothing is paid at booking, changing dates costs you nothing. Write to us through the contact form with your booking details and the new dates, and we will tell you what is available for those days. If it is simpler, cancel instead — that is free as well — and book again when you know.

Driving the car

Do I have to return the car with a full tank?

Yes. Fuel is full to full. You take the car with a full tank and bring it back full, so you only pay for the fuel you actually burn. Fill up at a station near the drop-off point and keep the receipt if you like. And there is no deposit to settle a fuel shortfall against, because no deposit is taken: if the tank comes back short we tell you what the refill cost and you settle that, and nothing else.

Is there a daily kilometre limit on the car?

Yes. Every car comes with a daily kilometre allowance, and the allowance is not the same for all of them. A small hatchback and a large SUV are priced differently and travel differently. Each car's own page shows its daily allowance and the rate for extra kilometres, so look at the car you have in mind before you book.

Can I drive the car outside Damascus to another governorate?

Yes. The car is not tied to Damascus. You can drive to any governorate, and you can also collect in one city and leave the car in another if that suits your trip. Just plan your kilometres, since each car carries its own daily allowance shown on its page. Tell us your route when you book and we will arrange it.

Can I take the car to Latakia or Tartus?

Yes. The coast road is one of the most common trips our cars make. Drive to Latakia, Tartus or anywhere along the coast; no governorate is off limits. And if you would rather not drive down at all, we deliver to Latakia and to Tartus for fifty dollars, with the fee shown in your quote before you pay anything.

Can I drive the rental car to Palmyra?

There is no restriction from us on which parts of the country you drive in, Palmyra included. What we would add is practical rather than legal: it is a long desert run, so check the state of the road before you set off, start with a full tank, and look at your car's daily kilometre allowance, because there and back in one day covers a lot of ground.

Can someone else drive the car, or only me?

Anyone who is going to drive must be named on the rental agreement and show a valid licence, and every driver has to be twenty-three or over. We accept licences from all countries, so a relative visiting on a foreign licence is fine. If you want a second driver added, say so when you book or send us their details through the contact form.

What do I do if I get a traffic fine while I have the car?

A fine follows the driver, so anything issued while the car is with you is yours to settle. If you pay it on the spot, keep the receipt and hand it over when you return the car. If a ticket reaches us later instead, we will contact you with the details. Letting us know early through the contact form keeps it simple for both sides.

Visitors and Syrians abroad

Can I rent a car in Syria with a foreign driving licence?

Yes. We accept driving licences from every country, and there is no restriction on your nationality or on where your licence was issued. Bring the licence you already drive on at home, along with your passport. Visitors, returning expatriates and residents are all treated exactly the same here, and the whole rental can be handled in English or in Arabic.

Can someone meet me at Damascus airport when I land?

Yes. We meet arriving passengers at Damascus International Airport, and delivery to the airport is free — there is no surcharge for starting your rental there. Give us your flight and arrival time when you book, and the car is waiting when you come out of the arrivals hall. Delivery anywhere inside Damascus is free as well.

Do I have to leave a deposit or a credit card to rent a car?

Neither. Tab takes no deposit and asks for no credit card as security — no cash left with the office, no hold on a card, and no promissory note (سند أمانة). All three are ordinary practice in this market, which is why the question gets asked, and none of them applies here. Cancellation is free as well.

Can I pick the car up in Damascus and leave it in another city?

Yes. One-way rental is available: collect the car in one city and leave it in another. We also deliver beyond Damascus — Homs and Hama are forty dollars, Latakia and Tartus fifty, and Aleppo and Aleppo airport fifty-five, while Damascus and Damascus airport are free. Name both cities when you book and the delivery fee appears in your quote before you pay.

Can I book from abroad before I travel to Syria?

Yes. Book online from wherever you are — the form works in English and Arabic. No deposit is taken, so there is nothing to arrange or carry for it before you travel. Cancellation is free, so booking early costs you nothing if your plans change. Give your arrival date and where you would like the car delivered, and we confirm the details with you before you fly.

I am visiting Syria for the first time — what do I need to hire a car?

A driving licence from any country and your passport, and you should be twenty-three or over. There is no deposit — no cash, no promissory note (سند أمانة) and no card hold — which is worth knowing, because most companies here take one. Fuel is full to full, and each car's page shows its own daily kilometre allowance. We can meet you at Damascus airport free of charge. If anything about your trip is unusual, send us a message and we will answer before you book.
