Why a car matters more here

Latakia rewards a car more than most Syrian cities, because most of what people come for sits outside it. Blue Beach — Cote d'Azur — is about 8 km north along the shore. Saladin Castle is roughly 30 km east, but the road climbs through the mountains, so give it an hour each way rather than judging by the distance. Further north, Ras al-Basit and Kassab, up near the Turkish border, are a full day out and not something a bus timetable will do for you.

Distances worth knowing before you book

Tartus is 85 km straight down the coast road, an easy hour and a half. Aleppo is 180 km inland on the M4; allow around three hours. Damascus is 350 km, roughly five hours, and it is the road most people take to reach the coast for the summer.

Latakia International Airport (LTK), still printed as Bassel al-Assad on plenty of tickets, is about 19 km south of the city near Jableh. Delivery there is the same $50. Send us the flight number and we time the handover to the actual landing, not the scheduled one.

Book earlier than you think for August

The coast is seasonal in a way that inland cities are not. Through July and August the city fills, and cars are spoken for well in advance. If you want a particular class of car for a week in August, ask in June.
